Cockroaches and Sourdough

Jun. 21st, 2009 | 10:56 pm

I hate cockroaches. I hate that they run in the streets of the city where I live. I hate the squishing sensation and sound when I step on them when they invade my kitchen. I really really hope Portland doesn't have roaches.

On the otherhand, I am crazy about sourdough.

Caterpillars have decimated our arugula. It's a little sad.

Greta Gargle

Apr. 27th, 2009 | 09:23 pm

I just found out that I share a birthday with Greta Garbo. I also found out that she is Swedish. My Swedish/English grandmother always used to call me "Greta Gargle" when I would dress up in my mother's heels, fake jewelry, and dress-up clothes and strut around the house.

I can't think of a sweeter memory than that right now. That totally made my day.

New Blog

Apr. 23rd, 2009 | 09:25 pm

By the way, I started a new blog, Bloody Show. This blog is about my interests in midwifery and health and the intersections of race, culture, class, sex, sexuality, disability, etc. with a little bit about cooking, gardening, and biking thrown in for good measure. Feel free to stop on by!

Ah, LA

Mar. 11th, 2009 | 08:56 pm
music: Adele

I had the strangest experience today. I was biking along a little side street and smelled freshly cut grass. And what was my first thought? "Who has enough lawn in LA to need a lawnmower?" And then I realized how long it's been (well over a year) since I've smelled that particular fragrance.

It's been a bit of a loopy day. Shortly after, still riding my bike, I tried to check my rearview mirror to see if there were any cars behind me. Of course, no rearview mirror.

Night owls

Jan. 24th, 2009 | 11:51 pm

I wish I had not worked so hard at Mount Holyoke to develop the ability to work with focus late at night. I find now that I cannot sit down and really focus on my midwifery applications until, oh, 10 pm or so. And then I'm good for 2 hours or so.

Oh Mount Holyoke we give thee ... our skilled procrastination techniques?

Sesame Oil

Jan. 24th, 2009 | 09:59 pm

friggasfemme's recent post has gotten me thinking about food and foodways.

Back when I first began to dive seriously into cooking (it seems crazy to think there was a point in my life before I discovered the immense joy of cooking) I was making all sorts of new things. One of my favorite recipes at the time was stir fried spinach and rice noodles. It used a few tablespoons of rich roasted sesame oil at the end to give it a bit of much needed depth.

I remember vividly how surprised I was when I bit into a natural malt ball one day and distinctly tasted sesame oil. I could never figure out what was more surprising at the time - that a flavor I associated with stir fry should be in a candy, or that I had actually picked out a distinct flavor in a food I didn't cook.

I used to wonder how my mother knew which herbs to put with which meals (does oregano go on Italian pasta or in an Asian salad? Hmmm?). Now I can't wait to learn new flavors and use them in foods.

One of the great joys of my life.
